Community Action changes people’s lives, embodies the spirit of hope, improves communities, and makes America a better place to live. We care about the entire community, and we are dedicated to helping people help themselves and each other.
Community Action Agencies work to alleviate poverty and empower low-income families in their communities. CAAs create a support network tailored to the needs of their communities. For over 45 years, CAAs have provided the tools to help people move from poverty to self-sufficiency.
No two CAAs are exactly alike because each is governed by the leadership and specific needs of its local community. But every CAA shares the same values, providing a broad base of support to address the economic issues of poverty, as well as emotional and other non-economic support. The programs offered help and encourage children and youth, support the working poor, provide aid in times of crisis, sustain and honor the elderly, strengthen the family and the community.
Sample programs include:
- Head Start early childhood education
- Weatherization
- Food pantry and food assistance
- Emergency and shelter housing
- Job skills and computer training and certification programs
- GED and adult literacy programs
- Financial literacy
- Workforce development
- Clothing assistance
- Income tax preparation assistance
- Medical and dental services and screenings
In Ohio, there are 50 Community Action Agencies around the state serving the needs of low-income people in all of Ohio’s 88 counties. Ohio's CAAs provide education and training, emergency services, and other assistance programs to nearly 800,000 Ohioans annually, administering nearly $750 million in resources and employing more than 6,000 people.
